US Army officer in the Civil War (1828–1879). Although successful in a number of Civil War battles, he is best remembered for two attributes: the similarity of his name to that of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his murder of a superior officer during an argument in the Civil War. Original 2.25 x 3.75 carte-de-visite half-length portrait of Davis in uniform, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Jef. C. Davis.” Published by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York.
