Jacques Necker

French statesman of Swiss birth (1732–1804) and finance minister of Louis XVI, a post he held in the lead-up to the French Revolution in 1789. LS in French, signed “Necker,” one page, 8 x 12.75, July 20, 1777. Letter to M. Chifflet, “Premier President” of the Parliament at Sedan. In part (translated): “I am very obliged, sir, for the details you were kind enough to give me regarding the unrest which rules in Sedan. Based on the report I gave to the King regarding this affair, His Majesty has deemed it appropriate to send the Parliament letters patent in line with your opinion, and that of the Attorney General of which His Majesty has been informed…I…beg you to use all the zeal and wisdom in your power to direct the Parliament in steps which might be necessary to reestablish order and public tranquility.” In fine condition, with central horizontal and vertical folds.
