Description

Joseph Wheeler

Confederate major general (1836–1906), known as “Fightin’ Joe,” who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. Two ALSs to his wife, both on McClean Arms and Ordnance letterhead, one two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.25, dated March 17, 1905, and one eight pages on two sets of adjoining sheets, dated March 31, 1905. The letter dated March 31, reads, in part: “Glad to hear that the 12 boxes first shipped have arrived. I suppose you will have to pay the ($6.40)…freight but file a paper saying the bill of lading said the freight was prepaid & that you pay under protest. I will then write to Mexico & try & have it corrected. Did the boxes of any of them look as though they had been opened…I packed the books in so close & tight that I doubt if they could get them back in the boxes if they took them out…I think I will arrange with Huntington to put them in his museum but not give them to him. If I do he must go to the expense of having the unbound books bound new & others repaired when they need it.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds. Accompanied by one of the original mailing envelope. RR Auction COA.
