ALS as president, one page, 4.75 x 7, Executive Mansion letterhead, April 30, 1887. Letter to E. O. Graves at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. In full: “The bearer Mr. Morse of Boston comes to see the photograph from which the Steel engraving of me was made in your Department. Will you please afford him any facilities possible, in his efforts to gain an idea of my features.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Cleveland’s hand, adding “Introducing Mr. Morse of Boston,” in the lower left. In very good condition, with uniform toning, partial separation along hinge, and tape reinforcement along reverse of central horizontal fold. The Mr. Morse alluded to in the letter may in fact be Samuel Morse, son of Samuel F. B. Morse. The elder Morse was a well-known painter as well as inventor. An engraved image of Cleveland would later adorn the $10,000 bill. RR Auction COA.
