“I think the photographers you allude to is named Sarony”

Welsh-born author, explorer, and special correspondent for the New York Herald (1841–1904). He entered the annals of popular quotation with his famous inquiry, ‘Dr. Livingstone, I presume?,’ upon finding David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary and fellow explorer who had become lost in the wilds of Zanzibar. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, March 3, 1903. Letter to Ellis Robb. In full: “I think the photographers you allude to is named Sarony of Union Square, New York, but as I may be wrong—Major James B. Pond—the Lecture Agent (who took me to the Photographer’s) has an office at the Everett House, New York, & would be able to answer you with more certainty.” In fine condition, with some light pencil remnants along top edge.
