Description

Pierre Petit

French photographer (1832–1909) who opened his own studio in 1858 and was the official photographer of the 1867 Exposition Universelle. He was also the first to attempt underwater photography, in 1898. ALS in French, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8.25, illustrated Pierre Petit & Fils Photographie Linographie letterhead, Paris, May 13, 1898. Letter to M. Aubanel Bros. Booksellers. In part (translated): “We have 14 different portraits of the Grand Monsieur Rucur Archbishop of Avignon including 6 in ceremonial dress; 2 in large format…If you wish the prints, you can order from me the cartes at 0.40 c. the albums 01.80 c. The 24/30 large portraits—4 francs & the 30/40—7 francs. I have them available on opal glass, albums, and carte-de-visite, promenade salon.” In fine condition, with mild scattered toning and soiling. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, filled out in Petit’s hand. RR Auction COA.
