American military officer (1836–1881), who, as a general in the Civil War, earned the sobriquet ‘Kill-Cavalry’ for his gung-ho disregard for the lives of the soldiers under his command. Following the Civil War he served as the American Minister to Chile in the Johnson and Grant administrations; after a decade long hiatus, he was reappointed to that post by Garfield but died shortly after arriving at the Chilean capital. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Kilpatrick, by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink. In fine condition, with silvering to dark areas of the image.
