Union general (1831–1888) whose cavalry command blocked Lee’s escape at Appomattox. Indian War-dated original 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo of Sheridan in uniform, by E. & H. T. Anthony of New York, signed in the lower border in black ink, “Phil. H. Sheridan, Maj. Genl, U.S.A.” An ink note to the reverse, signed “Tho’s. W. C. Moore, Bvt. Lt. Col., U.D.C.,” and dated August 13, 1869, in full: “This is neither an artistic nor flattering picture of Genl Sheridan, but it conveys a better idea of the man than any that have been published.” Some light scattered surface spotting and a small tear to the upper right corner, otherwise fine condition. Moore was serving as Sheridan’s aide-de-camp at the time, who was commanding troops in various altercations with Native Americans throughout the Great Plains. While this is a post-Civil War signature, the carte-de-visite features a 1864 portrait of Sheridan in his Union uniform. RR Auction COA.
