Description

In rare correspondence from France, Mary Cassatt pushes back a meeting to paint: “I have a model in the morning”

Influential American-born painter (1844–1926) who became one of the leading lights of the Impressionist movement and one of the first female artists to attain a reputation on par with that of her male contemporaries. Uncommon ALS, one page, 5 x 6.25, May 29. Letter to Madame Hertes. In part: “I was not at home when your note was brought or I would have sent my answer by the bearer. I shall be very glad to see you tomorrow late in the afternoon. I have a model in the morning & must go out in the afternoon…I trust I may be of some help to your daughter.” Cassatt has also addressed the integral address panel on the reverse. In very good to fine condition, with intersecting folds, several passing through signature, light wrinkling, and toning to adhesive at edges. Handwritten letters from Cassatt are quite rare.
