Choice original 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet photo of Sherman in uniform as the four-star commanding general of the Army, by Brady National Portrait Galleries, signed in the lower border in black ink, “W. T. Sherman, General.” Printed text on the reverse reads: “Imperial Carte DeVisite by Brady, National Portrait Galleries, 785 Broadway, New York, and 352 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D. C.” In very good condition, with a couple trivial creases, slight surface loss to the upper right corner of the mount, a few trivial dings to the edges, slight irregularity to the lower border of the image, and silvering to dark areas of the image. Sherman was given the four-star rank and title of commanding general on March 4, 1869, a position he held until November 1, 1883. The shoulder strap in this image, which features all four stars, dates the photo to between 1869 and 1872, when Sherman ordered the insignia changed from four complete stars to two stars with the US coat of arms in between.
