Description

The discoverer of the neutron, put to use for the atomic bomb

Winner of the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics, he discovered and proved the existence of neutrons, thus paving the way towards the fission of uranium 235 and the creation of the atomic bomb. ALS signed “J. Chadwick,” one page, 8 x 9.75, personal letterhead, July 28, 1971. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In full: “I apologise if I did not reply to a previous letter from you. Perhaps my reply was mislaid in the post during the postal strike, for it is very seldom indeed I fail to reply to such a letter as yours, even if it is only to say that I cannot fulfil [sic] the request. And this is what I must reply to you. I do not keep manuscripts longer than I require them for my own use. I can do no more than put some words on a postcard.” In fine condition, with a crease to lower right corner. RRAuction COA.
