Mansfield goes to a benefit for the man behind Rip Van Winkle

One of the last of the great romantic actors in the United States (1857–1907), he achieved fame in the late 1800s for portrayals of various Shakespearean characters. ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, Garrick Theater letterhead, September 2, 1895. Letter to Mrs. Edward Kidder, who was organizing a benefit for actor Joseph Jefferson, best known for playing Rip Van Winkle. In full: “I shall be happy to assist in any honoring of Mr. Joseph Jefferson.” In fine condition, with a few light creases and a central tack hole. Accompanied by an unsigned cabinet photo of Mansfield. RR Auction COA.
