War of 1812: Charles Stewart

US naval officer (1778–1869) who commanded the USS Argus, USS Hornet, and USS Constellation during the War of 1812. ALS signed “Chs. Stewart,” one page, lightly-lined, 7.5 x 9, November 23, 1841. Letter of recommendation for a clergyman. In full: “In understanding that the Reverend Thos. Porter is desirous of the appointment as Chaplain to the garrison of Fort Mifflin. I unite with the other gentlemen, with great pleasure in recommending him to that port. Doctor Porter as frequently officiated, in administering the gospel at this station heretofore: and highly to the satisfaction of those attached to the yard, as well as the inhabitants of the neighbour-hood and feel but well assured the he will perform all the duties highly to your satisfaction.” Intersecting folds, light erased pencil notation, and trimmed bottom edge, otherwise fine condition.
