Union general (1820–1864). He was appointed colonel of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry on Jan. 31, 1862, and fought in the Peninsular and Antietam campaigns. At the battle of Winchester on Sept. 19, 1864, while leading one of his brigades, Russell was killed instantly by a shell fragment which tore through his heart. Wet plate, albumen 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite photo. Excellent half-view in uniform, with rank of brigadier general. Backmark: E. & H.T.
