Irish politician and member of the Irish House of Commons, the Irish Parliament, and British Parliament (1746–1820). ALS signed “H. Grattan,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9, no date. In an intriguing letter written from Brighton, no date, concerning the mental health of King George III. Grattan expresses that he has received nothing of substance to tell Humphrey, “I cannot even now give you any further information with regard to the king’s state than that which you see in the paper.” However, on the 29th, “the Ministers must set forth in a degree the state of his majesty.” The king’s condition deteriorated to such a degree that during the last few years of his reign his son, George IV, reigned on his behalf as Prince Regent. Intersecting folds, one passing through the first letter of the signature, scattered foxing and rubbing on the reverse, a few small areas of separation along the folds, a light brushing to some of the text, and a pencil notation on the reverse, otherwise very good condition.
