Timothy Pickering

Postmaster general, secretary of war, and secretary of state under Washington (1745–1829). Manuscript DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, December 20, 1799. Duplicate copy of a letter addressed to the Citizen Directors of the Ligurian Republic. In part: “The President of the United States of America having been pleased to nominate and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to appoint, Frederick H. Wollaston Esquire, their Consul for the Port of Genoa…I have the honor to request you to admit Mr. Wollaston to the exercise of his Consular functions.” Cloth matted and framed with a portrait of Pickering and a biographical plaque, to an overall size of 24 x 19.5. In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds, one running directly under signature and a mild shade of overall toning. RRAuction COA.
