Description

Pope Benedict XV

Pope, born Giacomo della Chiesa (1854–1922) reigned from 1914 until his death. Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed ‘the suicide of Europe,’ and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. Vintage matte-finish 4 x 5.5 photo, affixed to a 9 x 13 off-white sheet, boldly signed on the sheet below the image in ink, “Benedictus PP. xv,” adding a brief sentiment in Latin and the date October 20, 1970. Photographer’s name is signed in the bottom border of the photo. Framed to an overall size of 10.5 x 14.75. In very good condition, with scattered toning and foxing, lightly affecting the sentiment and signature, light rippling, and mild to moderate silvering to the darker areas of the image.
