Description

George Clinton

American soldier and statesman (1739–1812) who served as governor of New York and vice president in the Jefferson and Madison administrations. War-dated ALS signed “Geo Clinton,” one page, 7.75 x 12, August 4, 1779. Letter to the wife of a Revolutionary War soldier. In full: “I have the Pleasure of enclosing you a Letter I received last night and it came to me from Colo Barber. Your last shall be faithfully forwarded to him, as I had reason to believe he would have left Wyoming before it could have reached him as I forwarded it to that place, it is yet in my Hands & I have some safe opportunity of sending it by a much shorter and safer route across the Country. Colo Day has promised to give his safe conveyances to you. I have not the least doubt from the Charge I have given him & the Friendship he owes your husband he will be particularly careful in executing his Promise.” In good to very good condition, with partial separations along intersecting mailing folds, edge wear, and scattered toning and foxing. In the summer of 1778, British troops and Senecas and Cayuga soldiers killed a large number of patriots in Wyoming. The next summer, about the time this letter was written, the Sullivan Expedition was launched on orders of General Washington. The Army extracted revenge on a large number of towns holding Six Tribes. RRAuction COA.
