Description

“There is a word sweeter than Mother, Home or Heaven; that word is Liberty”

Pioneering feminist (1815–1902) who, at the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848, presented her “Declaration of Sentiments,” outlining her view of the rights and aims of American women and contributing in no small part to the adoption of women’s suffrage more than half a century later. AQS, signed “Elizabeth Cady Stanton,” on an off-white 6.5 x 3.75 slip. Stanton pens the epitaph from the grave of fellow feminist Frances Dana Barker Gage. In full: “There is a word sweeter than Mother, Home or Heaven; that word is Liberty.” In fine condition, with a few spots of staining. Double-matted and framed to an overall size of 14.25 x 11.5. A coveted quotation from Stanton honoring a fellow fighter for women’s rights. RRAuction COA.
