French painter and lithographer (1867–1947). He trained at the Académie Julien, then joined the group called Les Nabis, which included Denis and Vuillard, with whom he formed the Intimist group. Ignoring the movement towards abstraction, he continued to paint interiors and landscapes, in which everything is subordinated to the subtlest rendering of light and color effects. In part (translated): “I’ve written to one of my friends connected to Salon d’Automne. I think you’ll be considered and I wish you good luck—But it’s not the competitions that make you a living—it would be better to have a commission from a macaroni merchant or a cafe concert star.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, light pencil notation to top right, and a few wrinkles.
