Boston-born Baptist minister and academic (1808–1895) best known as the lyricist of ‘America’ (’My Country ’Tis of Thee’), written while he was a student at Andover Theological Seminary. AQS, signed “S. F. Smith,” on an off-white 6 x 3 slip. Smith pens the final stanza from ‘America.’ In full: “Our fathers' God to Thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's holy light, Protect us by Thy might,Great God our King.” In fine condition, with a uniform shade of toning.
