Confederate cavalry brigadier general in the Civil War. He achieved prominence as Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson's cavalry commander in the Shenandoah Valley and might have been one of the most famous cavalry commanders of the war had he not been killed in battle in 1862. War-dated ink endorsement, "Approv, Turner Ashby," on a manuscript document, one lightly-lined page, 8 x 5.5, dated December 24, 1861, regarding a payment for supplies, with two handwritten certifications by officers. Second portion reads, "I vertify upon honour that the above mentioned…was received & was nessary [sic] for use of Capt. S. B. Myers Company (C) Col. Ashby's Reg. of Cavalry," and signed by R. M. Lantz. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, another endorsement signature over portion of text, a rough bottom edge, and some scattered light toning and soiling. Only a few months earlier, Ashby had assumed command of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, having been promoted by General Joseph Johnston. An uncommon offering from a prominent casualty of war.
