Description

"If you invited the autographic quiet I congratulate you for a brilliant thought"

Celebrated American-born writer (1843–1916) who spent much of his literary career in England and who remains best known for his novels exploring Victorian manners and morals, including such classics as Washington Square, The Wings of the Dove, and The Golden Bowl. ALS, four pages both sides, 4.5 x 7, February 18. Letter to Alice Leigh. In part: "I wish you would ask of me a far more difficult feat…Please find within the little pencilled scrap. I have inscribed my name with pleasure & I also reflect with pleasure that it's a brief & easy one…If you invited the autographic quiet I congratulate you for a brilliant thought." In good condition, with partial separation along hinge, moderate overall toning from previous display, a few heavier spots of toning and soiling, and a partially separated top left corner to last page. Despite the flaws, James's writing and signature remain bold and pronounced. RRAuction COA.
