Description

Madame Bovary's creator arranges a weekend rendezvous

Celebrated French novelist (1821–1880) best known for his classics Madame Bovary, Salammbô, and A Sentimental Education. ALS in French, signed "G. Flaubert," one page, 5.25 x 8, no date. In full (translated): "Yes! Saturday is fine for me. But at what time should I meet you and at what railway station? I believe that the visit to Lisors will not take more than 2 or 3 hours. So, the afternoon will be enough. Please make all the arrangements. I will be obedient. And what about the dressmaker? See you, my friend." Central horizontal and vertical fold, some scattered light creases and wrinkles, small pencil notation to top right, and a small circular stamp to bottom left, otherwise fine condition.

The locale mentioned in this letter has some interesting parallels to his celebrated 1856 masterpiece, Madame Bovary. That novel is set in Tostes, a commune in Normandy. That northern French province also is home to Lisors, the commune where the author planned to visit. Interesting content that blends Flaubert's first novel with its real-life setting. RRAuction COA.
