Star running back at Syracuse University; first black player to win the Heisman Trophy (1961); drafted by the Washington Redskins and traded to Cleveland but died the following year from leukemia before playing a pro game. A full page of Davis’ handwritten homework notes, signed “Ernie Davis” in black ballpoint, on a lined 8 x 11 sheet of paper removed from a spiral notebook. Davis has written notations on Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness with over 40 words written in Davis’ hands. In part: “Marlow = now Kurtz when he was in bad shape, when he…was almost completely lost…Boy, in Bed is alone is False.
