A spare X-ray proportional counter prepared for use on the Viking mission to Mars in 1976. Cylindrical-shaped part measures approximately 2.25” long and is encased in a 4.25 x 3.25 x 1.5 block of Lucite-like material. Etched on one side is “X-Ray proportional counter used on Viking Mission to Mars, July 1976.” Advanced technological components like this one would cost many tens of thousands of dollars to manufacture due to the unique task of this particular unit and that the cost of semiconductor miniaturization was much higher back in 1976.
