TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, FBI letterhead, May 6, 1948. Confidential letter to John R. Steelman, assistant to the president, at the White House in which Hoover forwards information. In part: “Reference is made to your request…for information concerning seventeen officials of the United Shoe Workers of America…there are attached memoranda concerning the following individuals, setting forth information which may be identified with them.” The letter lists twelve names, with no information being found on the remaining five. Letter concludes: “This data is being submitted for your confidential information only and is not to be distributed to any other source.” Double matted and framed, with a portrait of Hoover and a small plaque, to an overall size of 23 x 21.5. Rusty paperclip mark to top edge, a few creases, show-through from stamp on reverse, and a declassified stamp to bottom of page, otherwise fine condition. An interesting example of Hoover possibly exceeding his jurisdiction as FBI Director during the ‘Red Scare’ in America.
