TLS signed “With kind regards, Charles E. Hughes,” one page, 8 x 10.5, Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, February 9, 1939. The chief justice writes Edward W. France, president of the Boy Rangers of America, concerning a statement quoted in one of the organization’s pamphlets. In full: “I have received your letter of February 7th, together with the copy of the pamphlet entitled ‘Coast to Coast Comment and Commendation.’ I do not desire to inconvenience you—in view of the considerable number of copies that you still have on hand—by asking you to remove the paragraph over my name. But this statement was evidently made some years ago, and in any further publications I must ask that this statement be omitted, for the reasons already explained to you.” Intersecting folds, two of which touch his signature, light toning, and a few spots of rust along the top of the page, otherwise fine condition.
