Description

The conqueror of polio turns his attention to AIDS

TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Salk Institute for Biological Studies letterhead, August 11, 1993. Letter to Professor Paul Hartunian at Montclair State College. In part: “It is my view that lack of success in the development of a vaccine for HIV has been in the objective that has been chosen to be pursued, i.e. the production of neutralizing antibody which appears not to be helpful. This, I believe, is the reason why an AIDS vaccine has not yet been developed. In a sense it is the pursuit of an objective that has not until now been successful, and not because gp120 is constantly mutating, or the need for human volunteers, or the virus is difficult to battle.” In fine condition.
