Italian composer (1858–1919) best known for his operas, particularly the beloved repertoire staple ‘Pagliacci’ (1892). Dignified 4.25 x 6.5 cabinet portrait by W. C. Hiens of Vienna, showing the composer wearing an impressive handlebar mustache, signed in inscribed in French in violet fountain pen, dated “Milan, 23 May 1894,” then adding several bars from ‘I Medici.’ In fine condition, lightly faded, with light soiling and a bit of scattered light scuffing; the tip of his mustache has been subtly touched up, apparently by the composer himself. Nice musical association. RRAuction COA.
