American general (1726–1783) who served during the Revolutionary War and claimed the disputed title of Earl of Stirling. Partly-printed DS, signed “Stirling,” one page both sides, 11.25 x 18.75, January 15, 1771. Stirling sells a 200-acre plot of land in Orange County, New Jersey, to Josiah Gilbert for £90.00. The back of the document bears a handwritten document between Gilbert and William Livingston, a signer of the US Constitution who would later become the first governor of New Jersey—and Alexander’s brother-in-law. The document is witnessed by James Linn, who later became a New Jersey representative, and William Williams. Framed to an overall size of 12.25 x 19.75. Intersecting folds, a separation along the center horizontal fold, missing paper along some of the fold lines, mild to moderate soiling, chipping to edges, and a silked back, otherwise very good condition.
