Description

Jonathan Dayton

American statesman (1760–1824) who was the youngest signer of the US Constitution and who later served as the fourth Speaker of the House of Representatives and as a member of the Senate. Arrested in 1807 in connection with the Aaron Burr conspiracy case, he was never tried, but the scandal effectively ended his political career. DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 17, 1801. ADS, signed “Jona. Dayton,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, September 17, 1801. Noted at top, “Extract from Judge Symmes’s letter to J. Dayton dated April 18th, 1796” regarding land in the Ohio Territory. Dayton attests that he appeared before Elias Dayton, mayor of Elizabeth, and justices of the New Jersey Court of Common Pleas to state that the extract is accurately taken from a letter in his possession. Also signed by Elias Dayton. In very good condition, with light soiling and scattered staining, small area of paper loss to left edge, pencil notations, and show-through at upper left from an adhesive sticker affixed on the back.
