Among the notable achievements of his 32-year reign, the longest in Roman Catholic Church history, Pius convened the historic First Vatican Council, which included the doctrine of papal infallibility. Manuscript DS, in Italian, signed “P. pp IX,” one page, 8.75 x 12.75, 1874. Untranslated blessing signed at the conclusion by Pius, who adds the date and a brief sentiment above his signature.
