Program for a preview performance of Mr. President on September 25, 1962, 10 x 14, 16 pages, signed on the front cover in black ballpoint by Irving Berlin. In fine condition, with scattered light soiling.
Mr. President marked Berlin’s return to Broadway following a failed attempt at retirement. Well-known for his film work, Berlin was, at his core, a man of the theater, having gotten his start there in a 1908 revue. Although Mr. President ran for eight months—with the premiere attended by John F. Kennedy—it was not a successful show. However, it showed audiences that Berlin still harbored a remarkable love for the country that adopted and enriched, him. Berlin subsequently retired from songwriting for the last time after the close of Mr. President, spending the remaining 27 years of his life in New York City. RRAuction COA.
