Description

Full free frank to an officer who served under him at Valley Forge

Full hand-addressed free frank, 9.25 x 7.5, with franked panel measuring 5.25 x 3.5. Addressed in his hand to “Col. Clem. Biddle, Philadelp,” and franked in the lower left, “Free Go. Washington.” Panel is also stamped, “Alex[andria], March 24,” and one flap is docketed in another hand with the date 1788. In very good condition, with light staining (touching signature but not affecting legibility), folds (vertical folds touching address and “W” of signature), and small corner loss and marginal mounting remnants (restoration to seal hole). The writing is clear and dark. Clement Biddle (1740–1814) helped to organize the “Quaker Blues” volunteers and served as Washington’s Commissary General at Valley Forge. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
