Robert Peel

British home secretary in the 1820s, he instituted the police force, whose members were nicknamed “bobbies” and “peelers” after him. ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 9, June 1, 1844. Letter to George Cockburn regarding an artist to paint his portrait. In part: “I have been occupied…in forming a collection of…portraits of the most distinguished men with whom it has been my very good fortune to be connected in public life…Mr. Lucas, who painted the portrait of the Duke of Wellington…and if you would to accede to my request, I think I can prevail upon him to do…the portrait at your own house.” In very good condition, with tape reinforcement along hinge, intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, scattered toning, a couple pencil notations, and a small tear to bottom of last page.
