Otto Dix

German artist (1891–1969) best known for his Expressionist depictions of Weimar society and the brutality of war. ALS in German, one page both sides, 8.25 x 11.75, personal letterhead, July 11, 1948. Letter to doctor and art collector Justin Upper Room. Dix, acknowledging receipt of food, and reporting on extremely difficult economic situation and the monetary reform. In part: “From the announcement of your packages arrived this week containing 1 on: Coffee, Sugar, Cakao, Dehydrated Tea, I thank you for that. I am glad that you have received the papers and that you like them. - From the packages from Denmark 3 units have been announced [.] 1 has been received before 4 weeks, the others seem to be stolen…Once I have photos of more recent pictures I will send you some. To reproduce it, you see more than long explanations. We are in Germany … the currency reform … is in trouble, the money being very tight and no one buys pictures. But I think that is also set up the back. But we come from a Desastre to another, and will soon be accustomed to.” In fine condition, with bisecting mailing folds, uniform light toning, and light show-through from text on either side.
