“In a life of trial & conflict I have endeared to do my duty”

American politician (1811–1874) best known as a radical Republican and a staunch opponent of slavery. On May 22, 1856, Sumner was famously assaulted and severely beaten in the Senate chamber by South Carolina congressman Preston Brook. Sumner’s injuries were so severe that he was unable to attend sessions of Congress for the next three years. ALS, one page, 5 x 8, June 1, 1873. Letter to S. B. Hunt. In full: “Your note cheers me. In a life of trial & conflict I have endeared to do my duty. It is no small satisfaction that I have your sympathy.” In fine condition, with some scattered light soiling and toning. Accompanied by the original free-franked mailing envelope, addressed in Sumner’s hand and franked in the upper right, “C. Sumner.” RRAuction COA.
