Featherweight boxing champion of the world 1901–1912. Attell later became one of the instigators of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal. Attell is widely considered one of the best pugilists of all time, consistently ranking among the greatest featherweights to ever step into the ring. His stamina is plainly evident in this graphic pose—a contest widely considered to be one of the bloodiest ring battles of all time…even by early boxing standards. It was the fight portrayed here that led one spectator to recount how, by end of the fight, “each man was covered in blood from head to toe.” Attell also took his lumps outside the ring, facing allegations of fixing the 1919 World Series as well as fights, including one battle with Murphy five months before this beatdown.
