Joseph H. Potter

Career soldier from the state of New Hampshire who served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was twice a prisoner of war and was cited for gallantry on multiple occasions. War-dated ALS signed “J. H. Potter, Col, 12 NHV,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, April 28, 1863. Letter to an officer regarding an incarcerated soldier. In full: “Lieut. J. S. Tilton, 12 NHV was arreested on the 18 inst by order of Div. Commander. Please inform me whether Lieut. Tilton is to remain in arrest & accompany his command in the event of a movement.”Docketing and endorsement on the reverse indicates that Tilton was held for eight days without being charged and released to return to duty. The following week Tilton was severely wounded at Chancellorsville. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and some light show-through from docketing on reverse. RRAuction COA.
