Adolph Friedrich Johann Butenandt

German biochemist (1905-1995), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939 for his work on sex hormones. He was initially forced by the Nazi government to decline the award, but accepted it in 1949 after World War II. TLS in German, one page, 8.25 x 11.5, Der Prasident Max Planck Society letterhead, May 26, 1961. Letter to an associate. In part: “Mr. Pollay informed me that you have complained again in your letter dated May 8 that nothing happens in Federal Republic of Germany to improve the situation of German professors abroad…an organization has been founded…It is their duty to solve the problem of overcoming all difficulties in a federal state…I want to change things to go your way again.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds.
