Description

One Nobel Prize winner discusses another

German chemist (1879–1968) who won the 1944 Nobel Prize for the discovery of nuclear fission. TLS in German, one page, 8.25 x 11.75, personal letterhead, November 12, 1963. Letter to Nobel Prize-winning British physicist James Chadwick. In full: “A few days ago I received your kind letter and one day later, the second volume of The Collected Papers of Rutherford. I thank you very much for both. Besides your brief introduction, I read the article by Feather and find myself deeply affected again by Lord zrutherford’s genius. I still remember the years you describe in volume two quite well, even though I have forgotten much. The extent of the thoughts and results reflected in the writings is almost hard to grasp. And you yourself have taken on the extraordinary additional task of continuing the volumes on your own after our dear Rosbaud cannot be there to help anymore. We all regret Rosbaud’s death, not just for that reason, but because he was a wonderful person. Recently, our old friend Lise Meitner celebrated her 85th birthday, and I hope she had a good day, for there still must be many friends who wrote to her and feel close to her. Since Lise Meitner is a member of the peace recipients of our German Order of Merit, she is well known in Germany, and the big newspapers carried contributions for her birthday with pictures. I am enclosing a brief contribution of my own thanks that includes a photograph of a conversation with former German president Heuss who respected her very much. Under separate cover I am sending you a book of mine that came out last year, From Radiothorium to the Fission of Uranium. The opening chapters may be of great interest to you, the ones that cover my time in London and Montreal; the later parts are aimed at the experts.” A couple partial separations along intersecting mailing folds, punch holes to left edge, and a few vertical creases, otherwise fine condition.
