J. Edgar Hoover

An impressive collection of letters and signed photos, all originally the property of FBI agent Richard Lee, spanning his 25 year career with the FBI, including 20 one-page TLSs from Hoover. The letters from Hoover date from 1951 up to 1971. The first letter, dated December 13, 1951, sends get well wishes to Lee who was injured in a car accident, and is accompanied by a newspaper clipping from The Mobile Register with a photo and information about the accident; Several letters concern Lee’s transfers between various headquarters, including Mobile, Alabama, Miami, Florida, New York, New York, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Several other letters send congratulations and commendations for apprehension of various criminals for crimes including Bank Robbery, Theft from Interstate Shipment-Hijacking, and Transportation of Stolen Property. Hoover’s final letter, dated June 22, 1971, forwards a signed photo to Lee. This color 8 x 10 photo is included, and is signed and inscribed, “To Norma & Richard Lee, Best wishes, J. Edgar Hoover, 6.22.71.” Also included is a November 12, 1962, letter from Special Agent in Charge M. W. Johnson commending Lee for his “outstanding performance in connection with a matter of security interest to our nation.” Six other letters from Acting Director L. Patrick Gray and Director Clarence M. Kelley forwarding capture incentive payments, honoring Lee’s 25th anniversary with the Bureau, and accepting his retirement. Also accompanied by a ring of three old keys from Lee, with a keytag reading, “Keys of John Dillinger.” In fine condition. RRAuction COA.
