Sarasate was one of the most famous musicians of the late 19th century, with the best composers of the day vying for his attention in the hope that he’d grace them with the first performances of their violin works. The music penned here, Symphonie Espagnole (“Spanish Symphony”) is a violin concerto written specifically for Sarasate by Edouard Lalo in 1874. As the name implies, the piece has Spanish motifs throughout and launched a musical awakening during which Spanish-themed music came into vogue.
