Description

Howell Cobb

Confederate statesman who administered the oath of office to Jefferson Davis, also a major general and commander of the District of Georgia at the time of the Confederacy’s collapse. ALS, one page both sides, 5.25 x 9, October 21, 1859. Letter to an unknown recipient answering his complaint about Cobb’s non-response and possible charges against the recipient. In part: “When I called the PO Dept. I failed to get the charges brought against you & as Mr. Holt was then absent, I requested that I might be informed of them on his return. General Harrison was here…and I asked him if he knew of any charge against you, affecting either your personal or official integrity. The only charge, that I find is, that for some weeks you employed a substitute without authority from the Dept. This was a violation of their rules and regulations—but I repeat casts no imputation upon your character.” Framed so both sides are visible, to an overall size of 14.5 x 13. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a bit of light toning, and mild show-through from text on reverse. RRAuction COA.
