Italian opera composer and conductor (1774 -1851), extremely celebrated in his time, though largely forgotten after his death. Unsigned musical manuscript, eight pages on four 10.25 x 13 musically-lined pages. Spontini pens elaborate music and lyrics to one of his operas quartet "Voici mon Atala" and the beginning is entitled as Act I / quatuor and written for orchestra and 4 soloist voices. One line of lyrics reads, “Bon jour mesdemoiselles avec vous bien passe la nuit.” Over 100 measures in his hand, all boldly penned, with many of the measures also containing lyrics. In very good to fine condition, with some scattered light soiling, foxing and edge wear.
During the first two decades of the 19th century, the Italian-born Spontini, who spent much of his career in Paris, was an important figure in French opera. In his more than twenty operas, Spontini strove to adapt classical tragedy stylings to a contemporary taste for melodrama. This is a fine example of his work. RRAuction COA.
