Description

Signed in 1621, the year he secretly planned to dissolve parliament

British monarch (born 1566) who ruled as James VI of Scotland from 1567 and as King of Great Britain (the first ruler so designated) from 1603 until his death in 1625. During his reign as England’s first Stuart king, James authorized the well-known version of the Anglican Bible which came to bear his name and oversaw his country’s involvement in the Thirty Years’ War. Scarce DS, in Old English, signed “James R,” one page, 7.5 x 11.5, July 6, 1621. Untranslated document regarding a parcel of land, signed at the top by James. Detached second integral page bears several endorsements and docketing. In very good condition, with missing lower right corner, intersecting folds, and scattered light toning and foxing. All writing is dark and clear throughout.

As King James I went about the affairs of state, letters written by Count Gondomar have revealed that His Royal Highness had also devised a secret plan to dissolve the parliament of 1621 before it was recalled for a second session. Because of an escalating war in the Holy Roman Empire, James faced a belligerent parliament in England which pressured him to mount an effective defense against Spanish and imperial forces. James resisted and decided to maintain his rapport with Spain, making it necessary to sacrifice the parliament of 1621. Motivated by a desire for peace, the king provoked a confrontation with the House of Commons to give him a pretext for dissolving parliament. RRAuction COA.
