Hawthorne, surveyor,” on an off-white 4 x 1.5 lightly-lined slip clipped from a larger document, most likely from the 1840s while Hawthorne worked at the Customs House in Salem, Massachusetts. Matted with a 2 x 3.5 carte-de-visite photo of Hawthorne by Warren’s of Boston, to an overall size of 8 x 10.5. Accompanied by an unsigned FDC with a silk cachet honoring Hawthorne.
