Description

Carl Barks archive with original self-portrait sketch

Legendary Disney artist. Archive spanning a 20-year period highlighted by six ALSs, all signed “Carl,” all written to family friends Dave and Linda Hampton, most from the mid-1970s and one from 1983.

The letters concern several topics including moving, room rearrangement, one letter mentions “The sale of paintings is gradually getting us to the point of feeling we can afford a break,” on the second page of this letter Barks has sketched a few coins and a dollar bill; another letter bears a quick ballpoint self-portrait sketch of Barks trying to remodel and paint at the same time; another letter regards the increased orders of his wife’s painting with Carl hoping to “get back to painting ducks;” another letter in a greeting card discusses a trip to Nevada, “In Nevada we did like Uncle Scrooge. We were not spending fools.”

One other letter in which Barks forwards to a Swedish fan named Fred Milton, and the letter reads, “It is quite a gung ho letter, makes me wonder if I really did write such overwhelming stuff;” and a pre-printed thank you note, signed “Carl Barks,” sent after the passing of his wife.

Also included are several letters from Barks’ wife, Gere, to the same couple, as well as two very interesting unsigned handwritten drafts for ‘letters to the editor’ of a newspaper with very strong political and ideological content. In very good condition. RRAuction COA.
