ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, May 8, 1850. Author Charles Dickens wrote this letter to his acting manager T.J. Serle. Evocative of Oliver Twist, the circumstances surrounding the message reveal that Dickens was interested in one Rosalind Elton, who was one of seven orphaned children to whom the novelist granted financial support since 1843. The message reads in full: “I want to see you about the wood-cutting Miss Elton of whom Mrs. Mclan has spoken to me. Shall you be in town on Saturday? If so, could you call on me (appointing your own time) at the Household Words Office?” Light offsetting of the ink is clearly visible, but the resplendent quality of Dickens’ autograph is undeniable.
